West Bengal: Partha Chatterjee sacked as minister

The Trinamool Congress government of Bengal has removed minister Partha Chatterjee from the Cabinet six days after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). It also removed him from the posts of party secretary general and all other posts held by him following his alleged connection with the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam.

Announcing the decision after the Cabinet meeting on Thursday, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said: “Chatterjee’s departments will be under me from now.”

“I have removed someone (Chatterjee) from the Cabinet. Our party is a strict party. I have done several struggles in politics and am still continuing the struggle. If anyone thinks that they can malign Trinamool’s name, it won’t be tolerated,” said Banerjee.

A notification from the state secretariat Nabanna stated that “Partha Chatterjee, minister in charge, Department of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises, Department of Information Technology and Electronics, Department of Parliamentary Affairs and Department of Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction, Govt of West Bengal, is hereby relieved of his duties as minister in charge of the aforesaid departments with effect from 28 July, 2022.” Chatterjee held three portfolios and was the second most important person in the Cabinet.

Chatterjee was also a Disciplinary Committee member and has been removed from that post as well. He has been suspended from the party.
